Central to the InSites Platform is the Rules Engine. The Rules Engine is a powerful feature that allows end-users to define how data collected by the InSites Platform is processed and made useful by the organization. Users define conditions (i.e. “nurse” enters “exam room” with a “patient” for more than “10 seconds”) to trigger events (i.e. change room status to “nurse encounter in progress” and “send notification to physician’s PDA” that “patient is ready to be seen”). These rules become the means that enable organizations to automate processes. Through the Rules Engine, organizations may automate activities such as notifying the purchasing department that inventory is running low, advising transport staff that a patient is waiting for transport in the Emergency Department, triggering the Accounts Receivable system to post a charge for equipment use, reporting on the utilization rate of equipment, or sending a notification to security to let them know that someone or something has left a controlled area. These were just a few examples of the rules that can be created to streamline operations and create a lean environment.
